MACG Magazine: Your work has a lot of depth and definition to it. Can you tell us about a career defining moment that influenced growth?

Alvin Wayne: The defining moment that influenced my career is when I was approached by a luxury  realtor in Houston, Texas, to stage and design her own personal home and home office. This was a defining moment in my career because the realtor saw my work via word of mouth and social media; and, being that I had just relocated to Houston and was trying to tap into the Houston market, this was a big deal for me. This resulted in a great partnership with the realtor as well as many residential projects that followed. Because of this moment, I was able to carve a niche for myself in the Houston market.

MM: What was one of the most unexpected things that you have experienced or learned?

AW: The most unexpected thing I learned was self-confidence. I’ve always been a fairly confident person, but this industry has taught me to always believe in myself, and be confident in my choices/decisions, and to become an effective communicator.

MM: What was an unforgettable moment for you in this profession?

AW: The most unforgettable moment for me was when my parents consulted with me to do their kitchen re-design. This moment was most special to me because this was the moment that I realized my parents valued my opinion and career choice, and trusted me to be their interior designer.

MM: What type of training and development is important for success in interior design?

AW: I attended design school and received my Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design. Also, I am a member of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID).

MM: So, what’s next on your agenda?

AW: I’ve began working on commercial projects as well as residential projects. Currently, I am designing a luxury car dealership in Atlanta, GA. Within the next five years, I would like to own a home décor store, specializing in accessories for the home and eventually expanding into home furnishings. The ultimate goal is to have my own design television show.

Honestly, as someone who wants to be an interior designer, I’m glad he didn’t start off automatically knowing what his details needed to be based on what was happening around him, but instead, since he moved, he wanted to make himself more at home and in his own style.
