Following the announcement that YG Entertainment will miss MAMA festivities, Blackjacks and Inner Circles are processing the recent news of changes. The company has officially announced that 2NE1 is disbanding and that Nam Tae Hyun of WINNER is leaving the group.
2NE1 was the sole girl group within YG Family for multiple years until the departure of Gong Min-Ji (Minzy) earlier this year. As fans and the industry speculated whether or not the group would fully continue with three members, YG addressed the disbanding on November 24th in a statement:
“2NE1’s exclusive contract expired in May 2016, and with Minzy leaving 2NE1, we have come to the decision to officially disband after extensive discussion with the remaining members. As 2NE1 was YG’s official girl group for seven years, we cannot begin to express how we feel, but we determined that it was too difficult to continue.” They go on to express gratitude for domestic and international fans and that they will focus on the solo activities of CL and Sandara Park — both re-signed with the entertainment company. No new contract was made with Park Bom.
WINNER, the first to debut two years ago from the elimination show “WIN: Who Is Next”, put promotions on hiatus in support of vocalist Nam Tae Hyun. The member revealed challenges with mental health issues and his intent to take time away from the limelight, leaving some concerned about the group’s return. A source from YG shared on November 25th that, “After lengthy discussions with Nam Tae Hyun it was judged that it would be difficult for him to continue activities through WINNER. The remaining members made his health and recovery the priority and hoped for improvement, but it’s difficult to say when he will recover and return because it’s a psychological issue he has dealt with since he was young.” Nam Tae Hyun’s contract was terminated November 18th. The group will move forward as a foursome and have no intention of adding a new fifth member.
