‘Yuri!!! On Ice’ Movie Announcement

In 2016, “Yuri!!! On Ice” became one of the most popular anime of the year. Viewers followed Yuuri Katsuki, a young man who makes a comeback into the world of figure skating after a yearlong hiatus. With the help of his new coach and idol Viktor Nikiforov, Yuuri fights his insecurities and tries find himself in a sport consisting of athleticism and artistry.

The anime’s popularity stems from the heartwarming romance between Yuuri and Viktor, complex beautifully written characters, and an accurate depiction of the life of a figure skater. It has even drawn the attention of famous figure skaters like Johnny Weir and Evgeni Plushenko.

This massive phenomenon has fans yearning for a season two and although season two has not been confirmed as of yet, the creators of the anime have made an effort to provide new material that many have longed for since the shows season finale.

During the special event “Yuri!!! On Stage,” a fan event that featured the show’s creator Mitsurou Kubo along with voice actors such as Toshiyuki Toyonaga (Yuuri Katsuki) and Junichi Suwabe (Viktor Nikiforov), it was revealed that a movie is currently in the works. Prior to the event, rumors surfaced stating a movie was being developed, but was only going to be a compilation film. Producers have put those rumors to rest and reported the movie will have a new plot.
