It’s been a few weeks since NCT 127 made their debut in the United States by performing at KCON NY, but many were unaware of the second performance NCT 127 had on Sunday, June 25 at the Apple Store in Brooklyn, New York. NCT 127 are the first K-pop group to be invited to #TodayAtApple, an event that shines a spotlight on various world artists, entrepreneurs and educators to showcase their talents.
The event was very discreet, and few knew about it, but that didn’t stop fans from lining up around the block for the nine performers. Surprised Apple workers and curious New Yorkers passing by wondered who the line was for, and all were shocked to discover it was a group of foreign artists. The dedication of their fans, who gladly waited in the summer heat for hours, is exactly why Apple personally invited the idols to the location for an exclusive performance and sit-down Q&A.
The following interview questions were asked by host Arjan Timmermans then loosely translated into Korean (for NCT 127). Responses from NCT 127 members were given in both English and Korean and also loosely translated. This is a paraphrased synopsis of the Q&A portion of the “Today At Apple” event.
You just released your new mini album, “Cherry Bomb.” Talk a little bit about that.
Mark: The “Cherry Bomb” album is our third mini album with six various genres of music, including the performance version of our “Cherry Bomb” song. That makes seven tracks on our album. We spent a lot of time preparing for it, and I hope you guys like it. Thank you.
For Mark and Taeyong, you actually wrote a lot of your own rap lyrics. Talk about some of the lyrics you created.
Mark: We both have different ways of writing (lyrics), but we both take our time together. Different from the other albums, we tried to be as honest as we could with the lyrics that we wrote, so we took it a little personal. We thought of the fans while we wrote it as well. (Specifically) for the “Cherry Bomb” lyrics, I actually got motivated by the members as well.
Taeyong: There was a list of things decided on for the rapping, so we discussed as a group and came up with consistency for the (“Cherry Bomb”) topic.
Also, for the “Cherry Bomb” album, you really innovated your sound, and you worked with a different set of producers who had worked with many (American) artists, such as Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, etc. What was it like to work with these American producers?
Yuta: Working with these famous producers, it really helped us create a holistic album. We’re very happy to present that kind of album to our fans here today.
If you could work with anyone on your next album, anyone of your choice, who would it be?
Doyoung: It’s great to work with other artists but we’d also like to take the opportunity to create an album on our own.
Apple music has been very supportive of NCT 127, choosing you as the first Korean group to be introduced in Apple Music’s “New Artist of the Week” list. You also topped the iTunes album charts in 11 countries and ranked in the top 10 in 25 countries and (were) mentioned on our podcast radio that is broadcasted worldwide. How does it feel to get this worldwide support?
Johnny: We’re happy to be able to share our music and to be able to hear our music on the “Beats One Radio.” It’s very exciting. If we have a chance to come back (to the United States) we’d love to appear on that radio show personally.
In the new “Cherry Bomb” video you have amazing choreography. What was it like to work with Tony Testa and other choreographers to make such signature moves?
Taeyong: We look at Tony Testa as a teacher and while working with him as a group, it felt like we were all doing this together which was really fun for us.
Yuta: We were really touched by your energy today so if we have another chance, we’d really like to come back to the U.S.
If you come back to New York specifically, what are some things you’d like to do and places you’d like to visit?
Johnny: I would like to take our members out to eat, show them the ocean, go to Times Square. (Just do) Tourist stuff.
In general, what are some things we can expect from NCT 127 in the near future?
Taeyong: Just as we came to KCON, we’d like to continue coming back (to the States). In the future we’d like to show you new shows, skills, choreography and spread our music all over the world.
