“Luther” fans rejoice. BBC announced the return of the 2010 hit drama with Idris Elba once again taking on the role of DCI John Luther.
Nearly two years ago, BBC’s “Luther” wrapped up with a powerful mini special that left DCI John Luther back in his iconic coat, once again prowling the streets of London. The show has taken a great many unexpected twists and turns over the course of four seasons. Niel Cross‘ extraordinary talent as a director is evident in every episode. Cross painted a picture of a world that is not all black and white when it comes to right and wrong. We saw Luther’s personal life come apart at the seams. The downward spiral begins with the end of his relationship with wife, Zoe (Indira Varma) and the introduction to dangerous sociopath Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson). Luther’s relentless hunt for justice leads him to walk a very narrow moral line throughout the seasons.
He faces betrayal and tragedy within his own team of detectives. Seasons one and two introduce Nikki Amuka-Bird as DS (and later in season 3 DCI) Erin Grey and Warren Brown as DS Justin Ripley. Actress Sienna Guillory joins the cast in season three as Luther’s love interest, Mary Day. “Game of Thrones” actress Rose Leslie portrays young, eager DS Emma Lane alongside Darren Boyd‘s more reserved DCI Theo Bloom. At this time, no official word has been given on the possibility of past characters returning for season five.
It is not difficult to imagine that Luther will be in for yet another rough ride. According to Niel Cross, “There’s just so much we don’t know [and] I’m scared of the monsters. The face at the window. The hand under the bed. The shadow at the end of the street. Who’s going to stop them, if not John Luther?”
Fans may have to wait a while to find out. Filming for season five will not begin until next year.
