After their summer smash “Red Flavor,” Red Velvet is back with their fun new title track, “Peek-a-Boo” from their second full album, “Perfect Velvet.”
From beat one, the song makes use of a music box-like melody, creating an upbeat dance vibe. The song lyrics are also playful, comparing new love to shiny objects and a game of cat and mouse played on a playground. The song has a confident and flirty message, but it’s not overbearing. It’s light tune that fits perfectly in the group’s wheelhouse.
But music box tones can take on a haunting, eerie feeling as well, which the group highlights in the music video.
The members — Bae “Irene” Joohyun, Kang Seulgi, Kim “Yeri” Yerim, Park “Joy” Sooyoung and Son “Wendy” Seungwan — portray a small coven of witches who order an insane amount of pizza. The girls entertain themselves with odd and ritualistic activities befitting a rowdy group of young witches. Joy is content sitting in a circle of red candles, while Wendy, Seulgi and Yeri use each other for crossbow and ax-throwing target practice. That is until they invite the pizza delivery guy to join in on the fun. From there, weirdness ensues.
