EXO's Baekhyun, Loco Push the Envelope in 'Young'

The vocal powerhouse that is Byun Baekhyun is here to grace us with another SM Station. As a quintessential part of EXO‘s vocal line it shouldn’t surprise me, but here I am impressed and proud. “Young,” featuring Loco, is a new sound for both artists, which makes the collab all that more exciting.

To those unaware, SM Station is a digital music channel operated through SM Entertainment. The platform specializes in collaborations, pairing artists that may have not worked together otherwise. With that in mind, Baekhyun and Loco’s musical marriage isn’t anything less than perfection. A deep, pulsating synth and claps make up the percussion, but both elements rarely sync to the downbeat, creating a swing, almost jazzy, rhythm. While this instrumental is prominent during Baekhyun’s vocal parts, it’s most noteworthy during Loco’s rap verses where all other backtracking drops out, highlighting the contrast.
The music video and lyrics mirror the irregular composition. Wanting to be unique and fighting rigid standards holds true throughout. “I don’t care for imitation, I’m playing around with this uptight world …” Baekhyun sings as he and Loco sit surrounded by workers molding white clay on an assembly line, “Going on a path someone decided for you is no fun / A special wrong answer shines more.”
