If charges will be filed in the deadly 2021 movie set gunshot of a cinematographer by actor Alec Baldwin during its “Rust” Western rehearsal, the Santa Fe district attorney will announce on Thursday. A decision will be made publically known on social media and in a statement on Thursday morning, according to Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies.
Alec Baldwin Shot Halyna Hutchins
On October 21, 2021, while setting up for a scene at the ranch outside of Santa Fe, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was shot and died shortly after. Hutchins was killed and director Joel Souza was injured when Baldwin’s revolver went off as he was aiming it at Hutchins. Hutchins’ death was initially investigated by Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza, who noted “a degree of carelessness” on the set. However, after handing the findings of a one-year probe to prosecutors in October, he deferred to their judgment regarding any potential criminal charges. That report omitted information on how to live ammo got into the movie set.
Carmack-Altwies was granted her emergency $300,000 petition for the state to reimburse a special prosecutor, special investigator, and other specialists and professionals after taking over the probe. Hutchins’ death was called a “tragic accident” by Baldwin, who is most known for his appearances in “30 Rock” and “The Hunt for Red October” as well as his portrayal of former President Donald Trump on “Saturday Night Live.”
Alec Baldwin Sued People Who Provided Him Loaded Gun
He sued those responsible for handling and providing the loaded rifle that was given to him on set to clear his name. The pistol was believed to be safe, according to Baldwin, who is also a co-producer on “Rust.” In his claim, Baldwin said that when he and Hutchins were practicing camera angles for a scene, he pointed the weapon in her direction, pulled back, and let go of the trigger, causing the rifle to go off.
After an autopsy was finished and a review of police reports, New Mexico’s Office of the Medical Investigator concluded that the gunshot was an accident. Based on a damning account of safety failings, including information that production managers did little or nothing to resolve two misfires of blank ammo on the set before the deadly shot, New Mexico’s Occupational Health & Safety Bureau assessed Rust Movie Productions the maximum penalties.
Regulators fined Rust Movie Productions $137,000 because set managers did not adhere to industry standards for the safe handling of firearms. Rust Movie Productions is still contesting this claim. Much of the investigation into the matter has focused on Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the armorer who was in charge of the set’s weaponry, as well as an unaffiliated ammo supplier. The gun that shot Hutchins, according to an attorney representing Gutierrez Reed, did not contain a live cartridge, and the attorney believes that Hutchins was the victim of sabotage. Authorities claimed they had not discovered any proof of that.
At a movie location outside of Santa Fe, investigators discovered 500 rounds of ammunition, a mixture of blanks, dummy rounds, and what seemed to be real shots. Live rounds should never take place on set, according to industry experts. A wealth of documents, including lapel camera footage showing the fatally wounded Hutchins sliding in or out of awareness as an evacuation helicopter approached, were made public by the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Department in April 2022. Those pieces of evidence included witness interviews, email threads, text messages, ammunition inventories, and hundreds of pictures.
State workplace safety officials stated that when “Rust” stopped filming, urgent concerns about gun safety were resolved and that a return to filming in Additional Mexico would be followed by new safety inspections. In an agreement that hopes to continue filming with Matthew’s involvement as executive producer, the Hutchins family, including widower Matthew Hutchins and son Andros, resolved a lawsuit against producers.
