On November 4, 2022, David Butz, a former American professional football player who spent 16 years playing defensive linemen for the Washington Redskins and the St. Louis Cardinals in the National Football League (NFL), passed away. His 16-year career spanned 1973 to 1988. When playing collegiate football, he was a Purdue Boilermaker.

Alabama is the place of Butz’s 1950 birth. He played football for Maine South High School in Park Ridge, Illinois, where he was twice named an All-American in high school. He played basketball and set a state record while winning the discus competition at Illinois High School.

NCAA Football

Butz competed in collegiate football at Purdue University and was a finalist for the 1972 Lombardi Award. He took part in the Senior Bowl and East-West Shrine Game, where he was chosen for the Big Ten first team and awarded Defensive MVP honours. Butz later played on Purdue’s All-Time Football Team and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2014.

Football Career of Dave Butz

In the first round of the 1973 NFL Draft, Butz was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals (first overall). For a total of two seasons, he would play for the Cardinals.

Butz was traded by Redskins head coach George Allen for three draught picks, two in the first round and one in the second.

Butz signed a rookie contract in 1973, but it had a typo that made him available for free agency in 1975.

Despite George Allen moving quickly to sign him, the NFL determined that the Redskins owed the Cardinals two first-round picks in 1977 and 1978, along with a second-round pick, as payment for the player (1979).

The next 14 years of Butz’s playing career were spent with the Washington Redskins, where he participated in three Super Bowls. He presently holds the team’s third-best record for sacks (59.5).

He was selected to play in the Pro Bowl for the first and only time in his career in 1983, the year he recorded a career-high of eleven sacks. In the course of his 16-year career, he missed just four games.

While playing in the NFL, Butz frequently weighed close to 300 pounds and stood 6 feet 8 inches tall. Because of this, he was one of the heaviest players in the league.
