Danelli was an accomplished jazz drummer who was born into an Italian-American household in Jersey City, New Jersey. By 1961, he was performing R&B in New Orleans and had shared the stage with Lionel Hampton. He returned to New York in 1962 while touring with the group Ronnie Speaks & the Elrod’s.
Rascals In Their Youth
In late 1964, Danelli formed The Young Rascals with the help of Cavaliere, Brigati, and a Canadian-born guitarist named Gene Cornish.
Cavaliere and Danelli travelled to Las Vegas in January 1963–1964 to assist performer Sandu Scott and her Scottys, but they subsequently came back to New York City. They made their stage debut with the Young Rascals in the Choo Choo Club in Garfield, New Jersey, that month.
Jazz Prodigy Dino Danellie
Dino Danellie, a jazz prodigy from the Jersey City-Hoboken region, made his debut when he was just a teenager. He was inspired by jazz greats like Krupa and Buddy Rich, who frequently appeared at the Metropole, a posh club in New York City. The Metropole’s management noticed the burgeoning star and set him up with a cot in a dressing room years before he achieved fame.
Young Dino played rock and roll music at the Metropole during the day, occasionally travelled to New Jersey at night with his drum equipment, and at the age of fifteen, he performed on stage with Lionel Hampton.
On December 15, 2022, bandmate Gene Cornish stated that Danelli had passed away at the age of 78. Dino Danellie is the drummer who gave the Rascals’ rock ‘n’ roll sound the virtuosity of a jazz musician.
