On January 16, YouTube announced that the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) will change monetization eligibility requirements to 4,000 hours of watch time within the past 12 months and 1,000 subscribers. The change is effective immediately. In April 2017, the YPP eligibility requirement was 10,000 views over the lifetime of a channel. The company stated that the change, “will allow us to significantly improve our ability to identify creators who contribute positively to the community and help drive more ad revenue to them (and away from bad actors),” in light of recent controversy from Logan Paul.

Additionally, YouTube will implement this change across all channels, beginning February 20. Thereafter, all channels with fewer than 1,000 subscribers or 4,000 watch hours will be ineligible to earn money on YouTube. “When they reach 1,000 subs and 4,000 watch hours they will be automatically re-evaluated under strict criteria to ensure they comply with our policies,” they shared. “New channels will need to apply, and their application will be evaluated when they hit these milestones.”
