I wanted to wait until NCT DREAM had debuted and had a little over a month of promoting their single “Chewing Gum” before I wrote this for 3 reasons…

  1. I wanted to see if the song and concept would grow on me (because at first I wasn’t feeling it) which it did, after reading the age appropriate lyrics and watching the stunning live performances.
  2. The success of the single itself compared to other NCT units
  3. The members safety most importantly. In the sense that no members were over worked, exhausted and no injuries came from those hover boards they have seemed to master.

Over a month later and no injuries reported, a successful run on the charts and promotion period, so I am here to give you my rundown and thoughts on this adorable pinch your cheeks boy group

As another sub-unit from SM Entertainment‘s newest boy group project NCT (Neo Culture Technology), NCT DREAM officially released their debut single “Chewing Gum” on August 27th, 2016 with a Korean and Chinese version of the song. The music video for the single was release before hand on August 25th. The sub-unit consists of 7 members: Mark(Canada), Renjun(China), Jeno(Korea), Haechan(Korea), Chen Le(China), Jisung(Korea) and Jaemin(Korea). NCT Dream is the youngest idol group to debut under SM, with an average age of 15.6.

Due to treatment of young idols in the past, (not specifically SM) many fans worried about the groups stamina and possible busy schedules that idols normally have. Quickly those worries were put to rest as these 7 boys have proven they have more than just stamina, rising up to number two on the Billboard’s Worlds Digital Single chart two weeks into debut

Also, let’s talk about the skills they have! I mean just look at this choreo:

Makes me rethink what I’ve done with the past 20 years of my life.

Being a new lover of K-pop and all things Hallyu this unit was very refreshing, to see an actual “boy” group debut with a young concept that fits the idols promoting it. Also this was a daring choice on SM’s side because again, the age group and concept just by a first look at the teasers you can tell this was going to be a hit or miss on their part and could effect NCT as a whole(seeing that the whole NCT movement isn’t even a year old). It was a make or break moment that also the more I think about it could’ve been at the expense of young boys but I’m happy it’s been nothing but a positive and a fun experience for NCT DREAM who just want to live out the idol fantasies and get the privilege to do so at such a young age. I wish to see more playful age-appropriate concepts in the future from this bubble-gum bowing boy group.

  1. At 21 years of age I had never felt old until this unit debuted. Suddenly I found myself wondering where their helmets were, because “surely that’s not fully safe for them to be on those hover boards without the proper safety equipment”. Regardless of how old I felt, I was really genuinely impressed by how great they were – smooth and effortless in pretty much every aspect. I was also very glad they were given a concept that fit their age, as anything remotely like the first two units would’ve just been weird. You’re right, it was a hit or miss opportunity, but I think this group and SM really managed to pull it off. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

p.s anybody who’s heard this song and claims to have not had “ch-ch-ch-ch-chewing gum” stuck in their head for days is lying!
