Being one of the original human superstars of “Sesame Street,” actor and musician Bob McGrath became a generational icon. He passed away on Sunday at his New Jersey home. He was 90.

On Sunday, Mr. McGrath’s daughter Cathlin confirmed his passing. She claimed that problems following a stroke caused Mr. McGrath’s death. She added that the evening before Mr. McGrath died away, his family sang and danced to him while decorating his room for the forthcoming Christmas. McGrath was one of the most well-known human faces of the franchise outside of the television series, appearing in several films, video games, and sing-along ventures.

His Personal Life

McGrath, who was born in Ottawa, Illinois, on June 13, 1932, learned music at the University of Michigan before moving on to the Manhattan School of Music. In 1958, McGrath got hitched to Ann Logan Sperry. Five kids, five granddaughters, and 3 grandsons were born to them. From 1958 to 2017, the pair lived in Teaneck, New Jersey, before relocating to a ranch near Norwood. By the middle of the 1960s, McGrath was aggressively pursuing both his acting and solo recording careers. He joined the Japanese record company Nippon Columbia in 1966. McGrath once frequently performed in Japan.

McGrath was featured in many “Sesame Street” related projects in addition to the weekly TV show, including “Sesame Street: Elmo Saves Christmas” from 1996, “Follow That Bird” from 1985, and “A Special Sesame Street Christmas” from 1978.

In addition, he made multiple appearances for the show in a variety of specials, including “The Mike Douglas Show” and the yearly Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Throughout 5 decades and 47 seasons of television, McGrath played the amiable neighbor Bob Johnson, first making an appearance in the series pilot in 1969. After making his last appearance on the show in 2017, McGrath continued to be associated with it by making public appearances at numerous “Sesame Street”-related events. McGrath appeared in numerous of the series’ most memorable scenes while he was a cast member, including musical renditions of “People in Your Neighborhood.”
