On November 26, the 37-year-old folk singer Jake Flint passed away. Clif Doyal, the artist’s publicist, told The Oklahoman that the up-and-coming musician from Oklahoma passed away in his sleep on Saturday, hours after being married. Brenda Cline, who served as Jake’s former publicist, also confirmed the information and posted a photo of the late musician on Facebook. She wrote a heartfelt obituary for him, expressing her affection for him “much like a child.”
His Wedding
In January of this year, Jake revealed the news of his wedding to Brenda Wilson. He posted a photo of himself and his fiancée wearing engagement rings on Instagram. The wedding of vocalist Jake Flint and his wife, Brenda, in a secluded farmstead near Claremore and Owasso on Saturday didn’t seem to be affected by the rain. The news that Flint had passed away in his sleep barely hours after saying his vows to his bride reached Hosty on Sunday morning.
As news of Flint’s unexpected death of 37 emerged Monday, it was clear that shock and loss were present throughout the Oklahoma music scene. Clif Doyal, the Red Dirt singer-longtime songwriter’s publicist, revealed to The Oklahoman that he had passed away in his sleep the night after his wedding on Saturday. It is still unclear what caused the death.
His Early Life
Flint, who is from Tulsa, is the son of a renegade oilman & a hard-working father of two. He was raised in Holdenville. After learning that his father, an enthusiastic music lover, had ALS, he began performing music. Flint’s father hired a couple of buddies to educate the upcoming Red Dirt up-and-comer to play the guitar and take him to local bluegrass festivals since he would not have been able to engage in sports with his son.
Flint’s musical tastes, in addition to bluegrass, included jam bands like Phish and String Cheese Incident, 1990s rockers like Nirvana and Pearl Jam, Texas singer-songwriters like Guy Clark the Townes Van Zandt, and Red Dirt greats like Tom Skinner and The Great Divide.
Jake Flint, “Live and Not OK at Cain’s Ballroom,” “Jake Flint,” and “Live and Socially Distanced at Mercury Lounge” are the three further albums that Flint has recorded and released. With “Cowtown” from 2017, “Long Road Back Home” from 2018, and “What’s Your Name” from 2020, he charted three singles on the Texas Regional Radio Report. He was also nominated Breakout Artist of the Year at the We Are Tulsa Music Awards in 2019.
He appeared on the lineups of festivals held in the Sooner State, such as the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival, Bob Childers’ Gypsy Cafe, and Tom Skinner’s Skyline Fest, and performed both with his band and solo acoustic acts at venues throughout Oklahoma, Texas, and neighboring states. The last two occasions serve as fund-raisers for the charitable Red Dirt Relief Fund, an organization that included Flint among its ardent supporters.
