Tuesday morning in Fitchburg, a 56-year-old lady was killed after being struck by a car, according to the local police force. Police stated in a news release that the woman was treated at a local hospital before passing away.

The 2900 block of South Syene Road saw the collision at around 6:30 in the morning. The car’s driver remained on the scene and is helping with the inquiry. Near the crash area, South Syene Road was closed for approximately three and a half hours for the duration of the inquiry between McCoy Road and Ninebark Drive.

Beth Steffen, the principal of Badger Ridge Middle School, was killed after being hit by a car while out on a morning walk close to her home, according to a statement given to parents on Tuesday by Verona Area School District Superintendent Dr. Tremayne Clardy. Last year, Steffen was chosen to serve as the middle school’s acting principal. She replaced Jamie Thomas, who resigned as principal, and was formerly the Language, Literacy, and Equity expert at Badger Ridge.

According to her LinkedIn profile, she has also worked as the principal of Madison’s Edgewood High School and, from 2016 to 2018, the assistant principal of La Follette High School. After a brief term as an English instructor at Beloit Memorial High School, she also worked as a literacy coach & English teacher in the Madison Metropolitan School District beginning in 2001. Steffen graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree.
In a statement, the president of Edgewood High School, Kevin Rea, referred to her as a “passionate supporter for teachers and students.”Steffen’s death was “very devastating for the whole MMSD community,” according to MMSD spokesperson Tim LeMonds.
