Her record company, the Mushroom Group, said in a statement released on Tuesday that the singer passed away from complications following hip surgery while she was in the hospital in Geelong. She also received a diagnosis of incurable lung cancer while she was in the hospital.

The youngest of 3 kids, Renée Geyer was born in Melbourne in 1953 to a Hungarian-Jewish father named Edward Geyer and a Slovak-Jewish mother who had survived the Holocaust. Renée, a fellow Holocaust survivor who had assisted Geyer’s mother in Auschwitz after Josef Mengele had sentenced the rest of her mother’s family to death, inspired the name. The Geyers relocated to Sydney when she was a little child where her parents worked as managers of a migrant hostel. She attended several institutions and was expelled for misdemeanor theft from Methodist Ladies College, a private institution.

In Sydney, Australia, in the 1970s, she started her singing career as a youngster. Her career would eventually last for five decades and feature performances and collaborations with well-known worldwide singers like Bonnie Rait, Chaka Khan, Neil Diamond, and Sting. Trevor, a well-known Australian businessman with a prosperous media career, was married to Renee Geyer. They were wed for a very long time. There were no known children born to Renee Geyer.

She had 4 studio albums under her belt by the end of the 1970s, including the internationally released Moving Along from 1977. It was produced by Motown’s Frank Wilson and featured Ray Parker Jr. and James Jamerson as performers.
