Anton Walkes, Player For Major League Soccer, Dies After Boating Accident

Anton Walkes, a defender for Charlotte FC, passed away early on Thursday as a result of injuries he sustained in a boat crash off the coast of Miami. He was 25.

Anton Walkes’s Cause Of Death

Following the collision of two boats on Wednesday in the Miami Marine Stadium basin, Walkes was discovered unconscious and transferred to a hospital, according to the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission. According to a statement from the state agency, Walkes was in charge of one of the boats that went down. It wasn’t known if there were any other injuries. The agency is still looking into the matter.

His passing was confirmed by Charlotte FC on Thursday morning. All employees at Charlotte FC, according to club owner David Tepper, were “devastated by the untimely demise of Anton Walkes.” In 2022, Walkes joined Charlotte ahead of the team’s inaugural MLS campaign. This past season, he participated in 23 games, made 21 starts, and attempted five shots on goal. Jaylin Lindsey, a teammate from Charlotte, said he was devastated to hear the news.

London-born Walkes played for MLS clubs Atlanta and Charlotte after graduating from the Tottenham Hotspur academy (2013–17). Walkes was chosen by those teams in the 2021 expansion draught. There are no words to adequately express the sadness felt by everyone in Major League Soccer today in light of the untimely death of Anton Walkes of Charlotte FC, according to the league. Walkes was a London native with Jamaican ancestry. Walkes has a daughter with his partner, Alexis.

Walkes admitted guilt to operating a vehicle while ineligible in November 2018, was fined, and was ordered to perform 120 hours of community service. Walkes was in Miami on January 18, 2023, where Charlotte FC was conducting a 12-day training camp. He suffered injuries in a two-boat collision close to Miami Marine Stadium at around 3 p.m. Eastern Time. He was rushed to the hospital, where the next morning, just at age of 25, he passed away from his wounds. His MLS team Charlotte FC announced in a social media post.

Before making his major league debut in 2016, he spent a few years in Tottenham Hotspur’s youth academy, where he started his career. Walkes is renowned for his flexibility on the field because he can play as a right-back or a central defender. He possesses a superb sense of positioning and a strong sense of tackle, which enable him to make crucial interceptions and clearances. Walkes has spent time on loan with numerous teams throughout his career, including Glasgow Rangers in the Scottish Premiership, Atlanta United in Major League Soccer, and Portsmouth in League One. He made a permanent move to Portsmouth in 2019 and has since established himself as an important member of the defense.
