Charles Kimbrough, an actor who had been nominated for both the Tony Award and the Emmy Award for his role as a stern news anchor opposite Candice Bergen on the television show “Murphy Brown,” passed away on January 11 in Culver City, California. He was 86.
Kimbrough received a nomination for an Emmy in the category of best supporting actor in a comedy series in 1990 for his role as newsman Jim Dial spanning all ten seasons of the smash sitcom “Murphy Brown,” which aired on CBS between 1988 and 1998. In the 2018 version of the show, he appeared in three episodes playing the same character.
The news of his passing was initially broken by The New York Times, and on Sunday, his son and agents confirmed the news to The Associated Press.
The talent agency that handled Kimbrough, SMS Talent, Inc., said of him, “Whether on stage or in front of the camera, he was a delight to behold.” Kimbrough passed away in 2013.

According to the actor’s agency, the actor passed away at a hospital from natural causes. Beth Howland, who performed the role of waitress Vera in the 1970s and 1980s television sitcom “Alice” on CBS, passed away in 2016. She was Kimbrough’s wife. They tied the knot in 2002, which was more than a decade after he had divorced his first wife, Mary Jane (Wilson) Kimbrough, in 1991. Mary Jane (Wilson) Kimbrough passed away in 2007.
Kimbrough is stated to be survived by a sister named Linda Kimbrough, a son named John Kimbrough, a stepdaughter named Holly Howland, and a granddaughter named Cody. This information was provided by SMS Talent.
Kimbrough was born on May 23, 1936, and he was active in the New York theatre scene for many years. In 1971, for his performance on Broadway in the Stephen Sondheim musical “Company,” he was put in consideration for a Tony Award nomination.
Kimbrough also provided his voice for a gargoyle in the animated picture “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” produced by Disney. The gargoyle’s name was Victor.
