Officials in Turkey report that over 1,300 people were killed and over 6,000 were injured in the earthquake. A powerful magnitude 7.5 aftershock hit southern Turkey many hours after the main earthquake. Reports said it was felt in Syria and Iraqi Kurdistan again. The town of Kahramanmaras, where Hatayspor play their home games, was hit hard by the quake.

Gaziantep, around 90 kilometres from the Syrian border, was the epicentre of the first earthquake. Over a million people have fled the violence in Syria and settled here. The earthquake was felt in several places, including Cairo.

In a statement, Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan said: After an earthquake hit Kahramanmaraş and was felt across Turkey, President Erdogan said, “I extend my warmest wishes to all our countrymen who were impacted by this earthquake.”

Under the direction of AFAD, all of our relevant units are currently on high alert (the disaster and emergency management presidency). Our SAR crews were sent to the epicentre as soon as possible. Our Interior and Health Ministries, the African-American Development Fund, the Governorships, and every other organisation got right to work.

We also coordinate the reconstruction efforts following the disaster. We carry on with our efforts in the hopes that we may all emerge from this catastrophe with as little harm as possible.

One of the demolished buildings was the famous Gaziantep Castle, which had stood for almost two thousand years. Furthermore, a BBC Turkish journalist in Diyarbakir reports that a retail mall there has also been destroyed.

Experts predict that 10,000 lives might be lost should a second quake of magnitude 7.5 strike. Egypt and Cyprus, as well as neighbouring Syria, felt the quake. Atsu scored the game-winning goal for Hatayspor in the 97th minute yesterday, giving them a victory against Kasimpasa.

The European Union is sending rescue workers to Turkey, joining those from the Netherlands and Romania already on their way there. The United Kingdom has declared that they will deploy 76 rescue workers, equipment, and dogs to Turkey.

The fate of Christian Atsu Twasam raises questions.

A former Premier League footballer named Christian Atsu is reportedly among the thousands of persons in Turkey who are still missing after a devastating earthquake.

A former player for Newcastle United and Chelsea, Atsu was hurt in the 7.7-magnitude earthquake, and rescue workers are looking for him. Last summer, the 65-cap Ghanaian international signed with Hataysport of the Super Lig.

A search and rescue effort has been initiated, and Atsu is still missing. Several people on his brand-new team were stranded after the quake and needed rescue. Taner Savut, the club’s sporting director, is also stuck as rescue operations continue.

He signed with the Saudi club Al-Raed in 2021, however, by summer he had relocated to Turkey. His first goal for the squad came this past weekend, just hours before the earthquake occurred.
