On the first round of the Genesis Invitational, Tiger Woods gave Justin Thomas a tampon; the two were then spotted smiling and embracing; TV host Sarah Stirk and ex-golfer Sophie Walker have termed the act “crass.”
After his actions on Thursday during the first round of the Genesis Invitational, Tiger Woods has been called “crass” and “disappointing” for giving money to Justin Thomas.
Woods, a 15-time major winner, last competed in a tournament in July’s Open Championship at St. Andrews, and he was paired with Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy for his comeback to competitive golf at Riviera Country Club.
On several instances at the Los Angeles course, the 47-year-old Woods outdrove both of his younger opponents. For example, on the ninth hole, Woods blasted it farther than Thomas and then handed him a tampon as they moved towards their second shots.
Thomas, ranked number seven in the world, picked up the tampon and promptly dropped it on the floor before he and his partner began laughing and hugging each other.
In their post-round interviews, neither Woods nor Thomas were asked about the incident.

Sky Sports’ Sarah Stirk calls incident “crass” and “disappointing”
The host told Sky Sports News, “My main sentiments are sheer astonishment and being honest, genuinely disappointed.”
“I’m a woman in the sports industry. I have an extreme level of enthusiasm for the sport of golf and am very dedicated to it. Everyone is working towards the same goal, and I think we can all agree that great strides have been made in bringing more attention to women’s sports and encouraging more women to get involved.
“I think it’s quite upsetting that this happened because we want women’s sports to be on same footing with men. To tell the truth, I find it repulsive and crude.
“In other words, they’re the best of pals. JT and his good friend Tiger Woods play golf together frequently. For this round, Tiger Woods bested Justin Thomas. Everything about it smacked of ironic levity. Passing him the tampon was, in my opinion, quite blokey and laddy, implying something along the lines of “I’ve outdriven you” or “you’re driving the ball like a ladies,” both of which are derogatory to women.
“This proves that women are inferior to males since they can’t hit the ball as far as men can.
“That’s not the kind of thing we want to be displaying in the sporting world, in my opinion. It was rude, offensive, and shocking to me because he is a PGA Tour player competing in the Genesis. He is the organiser of a competition.”
