He had an interest in music since childhood as both his mother and father loved music and his father was part of the Timaru Municipal Brass Band, playing cornet. He started learning piano at the age of ten from his teacher Leslie Taiaroa. His teacher Leslie Taiaroa inspired him a lot about music and made him aware that creating tune and rhythm is not easy.
He then learned about jazz piano from Bill Stark, who taught him how to play music. He started his musical career as a guitarist. He played in the bands Hillman Hunter and the Roots Group and Hattie and the Havana Hotshots and also wrote some songs. After that Wayne Baird worked for a long time with the Timaru Folk Club and the Union Blues Soul Band.
