Who was Herb Kohl?
Herb Kohl was born on 7 February 1935 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S. He was an American businessman, philanthropist, and Democratic politician. Herb Kohl’s parents were Mary (née Hiken) and Max Kohl. His father was a Polish Jew and his mother was a Russian Jewish immigrant. He completed his schooling from Washington High School and did his college from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Harvard Business School. He earned the degree of Master of Business Administration. Herb Kohl’s father owned a Corner Market store before he was born, and in 1962, his family opened the first Kohl’s department store. Gradually, due to his talent, Herb Kohl became the president of Kohl Corporation in 1970. Due to which he had 50 supermarkets and many department stores under him.
Herb Kohl said, “He allowed me to make mistakes. I made a lot of mistakes but every time, my dad would just ask: ‘What did you learn from that? Are you going to make the same mistake again?’ Learning from mistakes was an important part of taking risks and being successful.’
Herb Kohl became Chairman of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin and then served as a United States Senator from Wisconsin for 24 years. Herb Kohl purchased the Milwaukee Bucks professional basketball team in 1985 to prevent the team from being moved out of Milwaukee and moved it to another city.
