The world of gaming is huge and addicting, and a majority of it is dominated by Mobile gaming. Desiree Dickerson believed so when she left Lightning to start Thndr, a mobile bitcoin gaming company.
Before Lightning came into being in 2019, there were a few who were trying to bring Bitcoin to the world of mobile gaming. Jack Everitt, a computer graphics expert from the U.K. had the idea of somehow bringing Bitcoin to the games he was designing back in 2013. But there were issues; the same issues that prevented Christian Moss’s SaruTobi and Takara from Scaling.
Christian Moss is an app developer now settled in Japan. He became obsessed with bitcoin gaming. He got this idea of a game where people could drop Bitcoins for others to find. He created the game called Takara. His other game SaruTobi also had this feature where you could earn Bitcoins. But as noted above, there were issues.
With time, the world of crypto grew more complex. The transaction times went as high as 10-minutes and the gas fee went through the roof. Result? The time and money involved in a single transaction took the fun away from Bitcoin gaming.
And then came the Lightning
When Lightning announced its launch in 2019, it became an instant hit among Bitcoin gaming enthusiasts. After all, it gave them what they wanted for so long – Near-instant transaction times and zero gas fee. The world of mobile gaming was set for the revolution.
Still, miles to go for Bitcoin gaming
Even though Lightning-enabled a big leap in the arena, there are still a lot of challenges to address before bitcoin gaming becomes mainstream. The primary one is of a revenue model that can survive giving out bitcoins to people.
Then there are issues like App-store not allowing in-app purchases with bitcoins. Hackers are drooling over cryptocurrencies and without top-notch security, bitcoin games can become a sitting duck for them.
Last but not least is that bringing in crypto rewards can change the very purpose of gaming. So, the games need to be designed so that they are actually played, and not just used for earning bitcoins.
