In his younger years, the elder Bregman was also active in sports. As a freshman in 1982, he participated in baseball for the University of New Mexico Lobos. Initially relocating to Albuquerque to play collegiate baseball on scholarships, his uncle Ben Bregman and father were teammates.
Beginning in 2006, Sam became a joint owner of the NBA Development League’s New Mexico Thunderbirds. Additionally, Samuel “Bo” Bregman and Sadie Hurwitz’s son, Stan Bregman, was a Russian-Jewish immigrant. When he was 11 years old, his great-grandfather fled the pogroms against Jews in Russia and moved to Washington, D.C. He later married Sadie Hurwitz.
Stan assisted the Washington Senators in hiring Hall of Famer Ted Williams as their general manager and worked as the team’s general counsel from the late 1960s until the Senators relocated to Texas in 1971.

Young Alex began playing tee ball when he was just four years old. He spent his childhood playing travel baseball with his best friend, Arizona Diamondbacks player Blake Swihart. The catcher helped his high school team win the state championship in 2009 while playing as a freshman shortstop while attending and competing for Albuquerque Academy.
Additionally, he was selected the MVP of the COPABE Pan American Baseball Championships in October 2010 and took home the Richard W. “Dick” Case Player of the Year Award from USA Baseball. At age 16, he became the first senior to get that honour.
Additionally, despite the Red Sox having selected Bregman in the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft, Bregman decided not to sign with them while attending Louisiana State University. For the LSU Tigers baseball team, he was a shortstop.
