Anita Pointer, one of the four sisters who achieved fame as The Pointer Sisters, passed away on Saturday at the age of 74, according to her publicist. The Grammy winner died suddenly while she was visiting family.

Anita Pointers had $5 million estimated net worth at the time of her death. From her work as a singer-songwriter, Anita amassed enormous money. In 1973, when Anita’s “Yes We Can Can” peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, she and her sisters achieved recognition. The Pointer Sisters were the first black female group to appear at the Grand Ole Opry thanks to Pointer’s writing prowess in 1974 when her song “Fairytale” became such a hit on the country music charts.

Anita Pointer and her brother Fritz co-wrote the book Fairytale: The Pointer Sisters’ Family Story, which was published in February 2020. The Pointer family’s origins, history, and experiences as young black women in the San Francisco Bay Area during the late 1960s Civil Rights and Black Power movements are all chronicled in the book. Along with sharing their chart history, discography, and other unexpected discoveries along the way, it also discusses the challenges and triumphs they faced throughout their career. Family members also contribute their recollections of the Pointer family background throughout the book, including Bonnie, who died away in June 2020. Upon publication, the book received favorable reviews.

Anita Pointer’s Early Life

Pointer, the sixth child of Sarah Elizabeth & Reverend Elton Pointer, was born on January 23, 1948, in Oakland, California. Pointer’s parents were from Arkansas, even though she was born in California. Her family drove from California to Arkansas almost yearly to visit Pointer’s grandparents, who lived in Prescott.

She spent that time attending 5th grade at McRae Elementary, 7th grade at McRae Jr. High, and 10th grade at McRae High School, thanks to her mother’s permission to stay with her grandparents. She played alto sax in the McRae High School band while living in Prescott. Pointer left her position as a secretary in 1969 to form The Pointer Sisters with her younger sisters Bonnie and also June.

Anita Pointer’s Relationships

Pointer had one child and multiple marriages. At the age of 17, Pointer wed David Harper in December 1965. Jada Rashawn Pointer, their daughter, was born on April 9, 1966. Later in 1966, they got divorced. Among the Pointer Sisters’ most well-known songs, “Jada,” which they wrote and included on their debut single in 1973, was inspired by her daughter. Pointer wedded Richard Gonzalez in October 1981. Gonzalez and Pointer later got divorced.
