Chris Beard, the head coach of Texas’ men’s basketball team, was detained early on Monday after being accused of strangling a lady at his residence. According to police records, Beard, 49, was arrested at 4:18 a.m. CT by the Travis County Sheriff’s Office on suspicion of felony third-degree assault.
Police responded to a 9-1-1 call for a “disturbance hot shot,” which is a call for “incidents that are ongoing and pose an imminent threat to life and/or public safety” (i.e. shootings, stabbings, rapes, riots). These calls are answered right away.

The university issued a statement saying, “The University takes problems of interpersonal violence involving members of its community seriously.” “In light of the information at hand, the university has removed Chris Beard from his role as men’s basketball head coach and will withhold payment of his salary until further notice. Rodney Terry, the associate head coach, will serve as the interim head coach for tonight’s game vs Rice.”
According to official court documents, Beard, who is not in police custody, appeared before a magistrate judge in Austin Municipal Court on Monday afternoon and had his bond set at $10,000.
The affidavit for Beard’s arrest was accessed by numerous media sites late on Monday. The lady allegedly told police that Beard “choked me, threw me off the bed, bit me, gave me bruises all over my leg, flung me about, and went crazy,” according to the arrest report. Moreover, she admitted to police that she “simply did not feel comfortable.”
The report states that during an interview with a witness, Christopher “indicated that he had audio recordings of the incident where he was not the primary aggressor.” “After Christopher’s statement, he was questioned about whether he would be prepared to disclose those audio recordings; he replied that he wouldn’t.”
