He died on Friday, December 29, 2023, at the Concourse Club in Florida. His death occurred due to a heart attack. He was at a private course at the Concourse Club of Florida in Opa-Locka with his son Luke. At that time during the race, he stopped the car and told his son Luke that he was not feeling well. He had suffered a heart attack due to which he died.
Tony Kanaan told the Associated Press “He was one of my best friends and we grew up together and most recently we worked together at McLaren.” “Earlier this year he was a guide and helping me. I lost a dear friend. My everything was destroyed. I must say, he went off in Gil style driving a race car. If I could choose any way to go, this is what I would do.”
