Ex-heavyweight boxer Goran Gogic is accused by the DOJ of trafficking more than $1 billion worth of cocaine.
While attempting to board a flight to Zurich on Sunday night, Goran Gogic, 43, of Montenegro, was detained by federal officials at MIA. Three counts of breaking the federal Maritime Drug Law Enforcement Act as well as one count of conspiring with others to possess and distribute cocaine discovered on ships in the United States between May 2018 and June 2019 were included in the federal grand jury indictment against him. Every count carries a required minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a potential life sentence.
On three ships, two of which were docked at the Port of Philadelphia and one at the Port of New York and New Jersey, 22 tonnes of cocaine were found in separate 2019 seizures. Approximately 20 tonnes of cocaine were found aboard one ship, the MSC Gayane, which was moored in Philadelphia. This was one of the biggest cocaine seizures in American history. According to Reuters, at least eight members of the Gayane’s crew admitted involvement.
According to the prosecution, between May 2018 and July 2019, the conspirators shipped coke from Colombia to Europe via American ports, using cranes and nets at night to load cocaine from speedboats that were passing by the ships’ paths.Prosecutors claimed that the intricate operation required knowledge of each ship’s crew, route and position information, and that space was available to conceal drugs in shipping containers that were already on board.
The suspected drug trafficking organisation employed a different group of employees with access to European ports to steal cocaine covertly from shipping containers upon their arrival.
In accordance with court documents, Gogic managed the logistics, working with the crew, Colombian traffickers, and European dockworkers to his and his Balkan-based cartels’ advantage.
Gogic, whose pro boxing career lasted more than ten years, was accused with conspiring and violating the federal Maritime Drug Law Enforcement Act on three separate counts.

Gogic, who was referred to as a “skilled drug trafficker” by NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell, was imprisoned after making a brief court appearance in Miami on Monday, according to his attorney. Nov. 7 is the date of a subsequent detention hearing.
He was surprised by these claims. In a statement, lawyer Lawrence Hashish said that the man “maintains his innocence and had travelled to the United States for a boxing conference in Puerto Rico.”
Gogic, a Montenegrin native from Pljevlja, competed as a heavyweight boxer from 2001 to 2012, recording 21 victories, 4 losses, and 2 draws in his 27 career fights.
US Attorney Breon Peace in Brooklyn referred to Gogic’s capture and indictment as “a resounding success for law enforcement” in a statement.
Gogic’s legal representative, Lawrence Hashish, stated: “These charges surprised him. He insists on his innocence and travelled to the US to attend a boxing event in Puerto Rico.
