Lentswe Bhengu-Mafoko, a South African chef, died on February 28, 2023, in Sandton Medi-Clinic. His age was given as 37. On his Facebook page, his family broke the terrible news. In it, the family said, “It is with tremendous regret that we commemorate the untimely departure of our beloved son and brother, Lentswe Bhengu-Mafoko, lovingly known to the media and his culinary family as Chef Lentswe.”

He was a great strength and bravery man who fought till the end before his death was announced. He was known as “Chef Lentswe” by the press and his family of chefs.

In honour of Chef Lentswe, the South African Chefs Association said,

The South African Chefs Association extends its sincerest condolences to Chef Lenstwe Bhengu-loved Mafoko’s ones and business associates.

The family of Lentswe Bhengu-Mafoko, who was best known as the chef on The Great South African Bake Off, released a statement on Tuesday, February 28th, claiming that he had gone away abruptly following a brief illness.

As stated in the release,

We regret to inform you that Lentswe passed away in Sandton Medi-Clinic late last night, February 28, 2023, after a brief illness. Because of what caused Lentswe Bhengu-death, Mafoko’s nobody can seem to come to terms with it.

Who is Lentswe Bhengu-Mafoko?

Chef Lentswe was reared and began his career in KwaZulu Natal, where he also worked in the financial sector for roughly five years. A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America – Cape Winelands, he started working in the industry in 2010.

Cheeky Palate and KFC Taste Kitchen were only two of the programmes he hosted. He was also a recent guest on the Metropolitan show We Start 2023 Stronger. Bhengu has been passionate about cooking and eating since his early childhood in the KwaZulu-Natal region. At age eight, he began working as a cook, following in his mother’s culinary footsteps.

Chef Lentswe spent five years working in investment banking before enrolling at the prestigious Culinary School of the Cape Winelands in 2010. After Lentswe finally finished school, she began making and posting culinary videos on YouTube. This was the catalyst for the launch of his television career, and he went on to anchor the travel/food hybrid show Africa on a Plate for two seasons. He co-hosted the second and third seasons of The Great South African Bake Off alongside comedian Anne Hirsch. Also, he appeared as a celebrity guest judge for the semi-final episode of season two of My Kitchen Rules South Africa. He stepped in for the late Lesego Semenya (also known as Les Da Chef) on the Mzansi Magic show Celebrity Mystery Box.

When Bhengu enrolled at the prestigious Culinary Institute in the Cape Winelands in 2010, he traded in his suit and tie for a chef’s jacket and apron. Soon after he graduated, he began working in the kitchens of some of the world’s finest restaurants, where he gained a reputation for his innovative and delicious cuisine. His talent and enthusiasm in the kitchen quickly opened doors to other opportunities, one of which took him to Africa to sample its many foods. In addition to receiving commissions from clients in other countries, Bhengu often participated in food-related festivals, events, and expos.
