Mike Leach, the head coach of Mississippi State’s football team, suffered a severe heart attack on Sunday in Starkville. He was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, where he’s still receiving treatment on Monday.

Leach, 61, reportedly collapsed at his Starkville home but was not attended to for ten to fifteen minutes, according to numerous sources. EMTs shocked the patient’s heart several times with a defibrillator to get it back to a normal rhythm. He was helicoptered to UMMC after being stabilized at Oktibbeha County Hospital. Two of his four children, according to sources, are already in Jackson, with the other two on their way. Sources indicate that Leach might have experienced seizures, which could have caused brain damage.

In the Egg Bowl on November 24, Leach, who is in his third year with the Bulldogs, led Mississippi State to a 24-22 victory over Ole Miss. He has three seasons and a 19-17 record with the Bulldogs. Mark E. Keenum, the university president, and temporary athletic director Bracky Brett stated that defensive line coach Zach Arnett is “in command of the MSU football team” until Leach returns. Leach admitted that he had struggled with pneumonia all season but was now feeling better.

Sid Salter, Mississippi State’s chief communications officer, advised WLBT that any reports linking Leach’s passing to actual death “should be dismissed.” Leach served as the head coach of Washington State from 2012 until 2019 before joining Mississippi State. In Pullman, he had a record of 55–47. After an 11-2 season in 2018, which was the most wins in club history, the Cougars had a 6-7 year in 2019. Gardner Minshew, a former standout at Brandon High School, served as his quarterback.

Joe Moorhead, who was ousted from Starkville after two seasons, was replaced by Leach. At Mississippi State, Moorhead had a 14–12 record. Leach’s overall record as head coach at MSU, Texas Tech, and Washington State is 158-107. Leach elevated the programs at Texas Tech and Washington State to entirely new levels. Additionally, in 2008, he guided Tech to its lone 11-win season in program history.

Leach has coached some of the top attacks in college football over the past 20 years and is well recognized for his air-raid offensive scheme. Anthony Gordon, his quarterback at Washington State in 2019, ranked first in the nation for receiving yards per game. In press conferences, Leach is renowned for his comical antics, such as joking about which Pac-12 mascot would prevail in a fight. He has one of college football’s most identifiable voices and faces.

Leach controversially lost his job at Texas Tech in 2009 for good reason following an incident concerning a player who suffered a concussion on December 16. The athlete was Craig James’s son, Adam James, a former star running back for SMU.

Elder James claimed in an email to Kent Hance that Leach punished his son for getting hurt by locking him in a closet for hours while the rest of the squad went about their regular activities in preparation for the Alamo Bowl, which was to be contested 2 weeks later.
