The wonderful adaptation that in 1990 Gérard Depardieu starred on Edmond Rostand’s theatrical work is still in our memory . Or remember that Mel Ferrer won the Oscar for playing Cyrano de Bergerac in 1950. But the new film that comes to us about the romantic and intrepid swordsman will come from a musical version that premiered on stage three years ago.
It is directed by the British Joe Wright , a true specialist in adaptations as evidenced by those of Pride and Prejudice , Atonement: Beyond Passion or Anna Karenina , and it will have an unusual protagonist. None other than Peter Dinklage, launched to international popularity thanks to his iconic Tyrion Lannister from Game of Thrones . His Roxanne will be Haley Bennett (seen in Hillbilly, a country elegy or The Devil at All Hours ).
A choice in the couple that ensures chemistry and experience, since both have also played the characters in the original musical montage . The third party in contention, Cyrano’s friend and Roxanne’s object of desire, is Kelvin Harrison Jr. , the New Orleans-born African-American actor who recently appeared in The Chicago 7 Trial .
Presented worldwide on September 2 at the Telluride Film Festival, the theatrical release date, currently in North America and in limited numbers, is set for December 30 . Pending a trailer, United Artists Releasing has released a few more images about Cyrano , the one that heads this article and a couple more. Joining three others published at the end of August.
And wishing that Cyrano can also arrive as soon as possible in our rooms, we remember that the soundtrack will be in charge of the band The National , famous for the song The Rains of Castamere from Game of Thrones or for their current collaborations with Taylor Swift , on the singer’s Evermore album .
