Australian politician Stephen Bromhead was born in the town of Taree in the Australian state of New South Wales on January 23, 1958.
Since 2011, he has served as the Liberal Party of Australia’s representative for the New South Wales constituency of Myall Lakes in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly.
Bromhead went to high school in the city he called home for his whole life. He entered the financial profession after finishing his degree and stayed there for nearly two decades. He eventually opened a café and catering company as a little business.
Bromhead was elected to the City Council of Greater Taree in 2008 and served as the city’s deputy mayor. He won a by-election for the Myall Lakes state seat in 2011, was re-elected in 2012, and then resigned.
For Bromhead, the road to politics began in 2002, when he joined Australia’s Liberal Party. He’s held a number of posts within the party, including that of president of the Myall Lakes Electorate Council.
Bromhead defeated incumbent independent MP Richard Torbay in the 2011 state election, becoming him the new member for Myall Lakes in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. Both in 2015 and 2019, he was re-elected.
Bromhead has been involved in many parliamentary committees during his tenure in office. They include the Joint Standing Committee on Road Safety, the Select Committee on the Motor Vehicle Repair Industry, and the Joint Select Committee on Greyhound Racing in New South Wales.
Bromhead actively promotes regional growth and financial investment in infrastructure. He has advocated for the improvement of the Pacific Highway, an important thoroughfare between Sydney and Brisbane. A new bridge across the Clarence River, connecting New South Wales’ Northern Rivers and Mid-North Coast, is another project he has advocated for.
Bromhead is also an outspoken advocate for rural health and education. He has pushed for regional school financing and expanded access to medical care, particularly mental health services.
During a cabinet change in 2021, Bromhead became New South Wales’ Minister for Highways, Maritime, and Freight. With this position, he oversees the construction and maintenance of the state’s transportation systems, including those for moving people and goods by land, sea, and air.
Bromhead is a family guy with two kids; he also has a passion for sports and played rugby union and cricket in his teens. He also gives his time and money to other local organizations and charities.

He died of mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer commonly associated with asbestos exposure, which he had been fighting for some time.
Mesothelioma is a cancer of the tissue that lines the lungs, abdominal cavity, or heart, and it is caused by asbestos exposure. This mineral was widely employed in a variety of industries before its dangers were understood. Stephen Bromhead fought mesothelioma with incredible fortitude and determination despite his disease.
