Sylvia Syms’s Career
She gained notoriety in the 1950s with the role of Ice Cold in Alex and received Bafta Award nominations for both Woman in a Dressing Gown and No Trees in the Street. Later, she appeared on television programs like Peak Practice and EastEnders. In 1991, she portrayed the former prime minister in ITV’s Thatcher: The Final Days. She co-starred with Dame Helen Mirren as the Queen Mother in The Queen in 2006.
Sylvia Syms’s Personal Life
Syms was conceived in Woolwich, London, England. She is the daughter of trade unionist as well as civil servants Edwin Syms and Daisy Syms. She was raised in Well Hall, Eltham, and received her education at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, where she later served on the council. Alan Edney and Syms were married from 1956 to 1989. She was the aunt of singers Nick and Alex Webb and her daughter Beatie Edney is also an actress. Syms, together with singer Vera Lynn, served as an officer on the board of the Stars Foundation for Cerebral Palsy for sixteen years, till 2020.
