Bell, who was born on January 26, 1943, to two musicians in Jamaica, was nurtured in West Philadelphia alongside nine other siblings. Although he had studied classical piano, he eventually entered the pop genre.
He began performing with Gamble in the band Kenny & the Romeos. Bell quit the band, and Huff took over at the keyboard.
Bell, an arranger and songwriter, worked for Chubby Checker as a staff writer and tour conductor. The Delfonics’ songs “La-La (Means I Love You)” and “Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind This Time)” were also produced by him.
His other compositions include the Orlons’ “I Can’t Take It” and Linda Creed’s “You Make Me Feel Brand New.”

He also orchestrated the strings for the O’Jays’ smash song “Back Stabbers” from 1972. The band was signed to the Philadelphia International Records imprint of Gamble & Huff.

Throughout his career, he did work with Johnny Mathis, Teddy Pendergrass, Deniece Williams, and Elton John. Additionally, he collaborated with Dusty Springfield, Lou Rawls, Anthony & The Imperials, and Dionne Warwick.
Bell received three Grammy nominations and took home the award for Best Producer of the Year in 1975. In 2006, he was admitted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Vanessa, his wife, and his children Royal, Troy, Tia, Mark, Cybell, and Christopher are his survivors.
