Jacqueline S. Gold was born on July 16, 1960 in Bromley, Kent, England, and is the Chief Executive Officer of the women-run businesses Ann Summers and Knickerbox under the Gold Group International umbrella. When Karen Summers first started working at her father’s firm, Ann Summers, it was controlled entirely by males; as she put it, “It was all guys, it was the industry as we all understand it.” After learning more about Ann Summers, a lingerie and toy retailer popular in the 1970s, Karen saw an opportunity to pivot the company’s emphasis to cater only to women.
After beginning her career at Ann Summers in 1979 as a general assistant in the mail-order division, Jacqueline Gold rose through the ranks to become the company’s CEO. After years of hard effort, she was promoted to her current position as CEO in 1987. During her time at the helm, Ann Summers grew from a modest mail-order business to a national retail network with more than 140 locations throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland. Gold is also well-known for her charitable contributions, which have benefited organizations like the Eve Appeal and Wellbeing of Women. Both of these organizations seek to better the health of mothers and infants. In 2016, she received an OBE for her contributions to entrepreneurship, women in business, and social enterprise in the United Kingdom.
