Filmmaker Brian Tufano BSC was from England.The BBC’s Gainsborough Studios hired Tufano, a projectionist who was born in London in 1939, in 1956. He later worked as a projectionist at Ealing Studios, which housed the BBC’s film division. He eventually progressed from an apprentice helper to a cameraman in.

Tufano collaborated with many filmmakers during his 21-year career at the BBC, including Jack Gold, Ken Russell, and Alan Parker. For the 1975 BBC television film The Evacuees, they all worked together. Tufano worked as an auxiliary photographer on Ridley Scott’s 1982 film Blade Runner after leaving the BBC.

Later, he worked on several groundbreaking films in the 1990s with Danny Boyle, whom he had met at the BBC. They collaborated on Boyle’s debut picture Shallow Grave in 1994, which opened the way for their later performances in Trainspotting and A Life Less Ordinary.

Tufano worked on movies like Menhaj Huda’s Jump Boy (1999), Menhaj O’Donnell’s East is East (1999), Stephen Daldry’s Billy Elliot (2000), and Franc Roddam’s Quadrophenia (1979) as an assistant to various upcoming filmmakers.

From 2003 to 2016, Tufano headed the cinematography department at the UK’s National Film and Television School (NFTS), where he is still an adjunct professor today.
