DJ Samtex has stated that it is unfortunate that another icon has passed away. Dave, also known as Trugoy the Dove, passed away recently. He was a co-founder of the groundbreaking, inventive, and iconic rap trio De La Soul. The news is really painful to the heart. Sincere sympathies to Posdnous, Maseo, and his family in their time of loss.

When De La Soul released their studio album 3 Feet High And Rising in 1989, it was praised for being a more light-hearted and positive counterpart to more charged rap offerings such as N.W.A.’s Straight Outta Compton, which was released a year earlier. De La Soul is considered to be one of the most innovative groups in the history of rap.

Jolicoeur said that Trugoy was a reversed spelling of the word yoghurt; however, more lately he had been going by the name Dave. By sampling artists ranging all the way from Johnny Cash and Steely Dan to Hall & Oates, the band heralded the beginning of the alternative hip-hop movement.

Some people even referred to De La Soul as a hippy band at the time. Michael Azzerad, a music reviewer for Rolling Stone, called De La Soul’s debut album the first “psychedelic hip-hop record.” Because of its important place in history, the National Recording Registry at the Library of Congress was expanded to include 3 Feet High and Rising in the year 2010.
