As per ESPN, their ex-analyst, and Seattle Sports, their ex-radio show host, veteran NFL journalist John Clayton passed away on Friday. John was lovingly known as “The Professor” due to his extensive understanding of the sport. John Clayton died when he was 67 years old. John Clayton, a Pittsburgh native, started his career as a professional sports reporter in 1972, chronicling the Pittsburgh Steelers. Numerous people have been affected by his death, and they have all come together to pay tribute to John.
Clayton’s regular discussions with previous NFL player Sean Salisbury on ESPN broadcast have been some of his greatest remembered moments in the sport. In the geek vs. athlete theme, they used to have a fun dynamic. John Clayton was also featured in possibly the best “This is SportsCenter” advertisement of all history, morphing from a typical football journalist to a lengthy-haired metalhead in a heartbeat as his perfect competence was lauded. After leaving the Mothership, John Clayton proceeded to chronicle the Seahawks for ESPN Radio’s Seattle station. He was writing reports for them even one week before his demise.
Tributes for John have come pouring in from all across the sport’s players and fans alike. His former ESPN coworker Chris Mortensen has tweeted out, “His wife Pat and sister Amy were at his side and communicated earlier he passed peacefully after a brief illness.
We loved John. We are mourning his loss. Pat has asked the Seahawks to release further information.” NFL analyst and former NFL quarterback Sean Salisbury penned down an emotional farewell, “I am heartbroken. John was family to me. We have been friends since 1986. He has been a weekly guest on my radio show for years. We have remained close since our Television days.
We talked regularly. I’ve often said John would be the guy who would stop everything he was doing to make sure anyone would have everything they needed. He was a phenomenal television friend and a loyal life friend to me. A special man. I will miss him deeply. Our friendship was special.”
