Ruby Wax OBE (née Wachs; born April 19, 1953]) is a British-American actress, comedian, writer, TV personality, and advocate for better treatment of mental illness. Wax is a trained classical actress who performed on the ITV series Girls on Top (1985–1986) and spent five years with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Wax rose to fame as a comedic interviewer on programmes including The Full Wax (1991–1994), Ruby Wax Meets… (1994–1998), Ruby (1997–2000), and The Ruby Wax Show (2002), playing up to British stereotypes of the abrasive American manner. She worked as a script editor and guest starred on two episodes of the Absolutely Fabulous BBC sitcom from 1992 to 2012. Ruby Wax has been open about her personal battles with depression and is a strong proponent of raising awareness about mental health issues. She graduated with a Master of Science in mindfulness-based cognitive therapy from Oxford in 2013. Since then, she’s published a number of books on the subject, such as “Sane New World: Taming the Mind” and “A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled.”

Wax has made many documentaries about mental health issues in addition to her writing and advocacy efforts. Ruby Wax: The Power of Talk, her documentary about the efficacy of talk therapy, was released in 2019. The film included in-depth interviews with professionals in the area.
