Tatjana Patitz’s Early Life
Patitz was raised in Skanör, Sweden, after being born in Hamburg, Germany. Her father was a German travel journalist who made it possible for his family to visit and live abroad. Patitz’s mother was a dancer from Estonia who appeared at Paris’ illustrious Le Lido. According to Patitz’s parents, their romance was the result of two individuals falling in love and choosing to spend the rest of their lives together.
Her parents first met at a tasting event in a bodega in Spain where her mom was a student traveling with a modern dance company. Patitz started horseback riding when he was seven years old. She sought solace in the summers at the family’s summer residence on the island of Mallorca, where she took part in horse camps.

At the age of 17, Patitz competed in the Elite Model Look and made it to the finals. Based on a Polaroid, founder John Casablancas of Elite Model Management placed Patitz third. Patitz received a modeling contract and relocated to Paris to start her career. Although she wasn’t immediately successful, Patitz had started working regularly by 1985, and at the end of the year, she modeled on her first significant cover of British Vogue.
She started working with photographer Peter Lindbergh the same year, and the two developed a 30-year working partnership that helped usher in the supermodel era. Patitz was praised for raising standards of feminine attractiveness as her career rose. The first supermodels were Patitz and a select number of high-profile, individualistic-appearing, business-minded fashion models.
During this time, Peter Lindbergh captured Patitz and other models having fun on the beach in a photograph for Vogue. The legendary fashion image, titled “White Cotton Shirts,” was published alongside a piece that singled out Patitz for her “astonishing presence” and praised her “uncosmeticized womanliness, unique and vital in the 1980s.”
