Australian Veteran Actor Tony Barry passed away At Age Of 81

Veteran Australian actor Tony Barry, who played long-running roles in the TV drama The Time of Our Lives and the cult New Zealand comedy Goodbye Pork Pie, has passed away. He was 81.

Gaylene Preston, a filmmaker from New Zealand and a friend of Barry’s, posted on Facebook that the star had passed away in Murwillumbah, Australia, following a protracted illness.

Tony Barry’s Career

Barry, who was born on August 28, 1941, in Queensland, Australia, made his television debut in 1968’s Skippy: the Bush Kangaroo. He then made further appearances in several Australian TV programs, such as The Box and Matlock Police. In 1977’s historical drama The Mango Tree, directed by Kevin James Dobson, he made his feature film debut. Over the ensuing years, he accrued over 160 film and television credits. His most well-known film roles come from the Ken Hannam drama Break of Day, Terry Bourke’s Little Boy Lost, Phillip Noyce’s Newsfront, John Laing’s Beyond Reasonable Doubt, Duan Makavejev’s The Coca-Cola Kid, Park Chan-Lady Wook’s Vengeance, and Baz Luhrmann’s sprawling epic Australia.

Barry’s most enduring performance was in the 1981 New Zealand comedy Goodbye Pork Pie, directed by Geoff Murphy. Barry played John in the movie. After his girlfriend decides to leave him and return home to Invercargill, John decides to drive from Auckland to Invercargill to talk to her. His yellow Mini 1000 has since become recognizable as this character. Goodbye Pork Pie was the first domestically produced movie to experience wide-scale popularity, marking a significant turning point in New Zealand cinema.

Barry was made an “honorary Kiwi” as a result of the movie’s popularity & cultural relevance in New Zealand, and he was the only Australian to appear on a postage stamp there. Dean O’Gorman played John in the 2016 remake of the movie, which was titled Pork Pie. The drama The Time of Our Lives on Australian Broadcasting Corp. featured Barry in one of his most prominent recent television roles. He played Ray Tivoli in the show, but in the middle of filming in 2013, he experienced a health crisis and lost his left leg as a result of a ten-year struggle with melanoma.
