Victor Lewis-Smith, a writer, broadcaster, and humorist, has away at age 65 after a brief illness. According to a statement from the Borkowski PR firm, he passed away on Saturday in Bruges, Belgium.
In addition to his work in TV production, Lewis-Smith was well-known for his absurdist sense of humour and his fake phone calls that targeted prominent individuals like Diana, Princess of Wales.
He was born in Essex and started his broadcasting career at BBC Radio Medway before enrolling at the University of York to study music in the late 1970s. He moved to Radio 4 after serving as a presenter for Radio York, where he worked as a staff producer for Midweek and Start The Week in the middle of the 1980s. He contributed his anarchic aesthetic to the venerable programme Loose Ends.
Lewis-Smith quit his job at the BBC to pursue a career in print journalism. He spent more than 15 years as the chief television critic for the London Evening Standard and 10 years as a columnist for the Daily Mirror. He spent 30 years writing for Private Eye and reviewing restaurants for Harpers & Queen.
