The assistant coach for Zimbabwe’s women, Sinikiwe Mpofu, passed away at the age of 37. Her passing occurs less than a month after Shepherd Makunura, the men’s team fielding coach, passed away on December 15 of natural causes.
Sinikiwe Mpofu’s Cause Of Death
Mpofu collapsed at her residence in Masvingo on Saturday and based on the Zimbabwe Cricket website, she was declared dead when she arrived at a medical facility. A post-mortem was scheduled to figure out the cause of her death.
Sinikiwe Mpofu’s Early Life
Sinikiwe, a gifted all-arounder who was born in Bulawayo on February 21, 1985, was a member of the historic team that presented Zimbabwe women in their inaugural international cricket match in December 2006. She began participating in the sport while still a junior at Mpopoma High School and later played for the local team Westerns. When she relocated to Harare to pursue additional study in 2007, she joined the Takashinga Cricket Club and then also made it onto the Northerns squad. She began coaching and scoring when her playing career came to an end, and she has since become a crucial member of ZC’s game development frameworks at the provincial and national levels.
Sinikiwe Mpofu’s Career
Mpofu, an all-around player, participated in the inaugural international game for the ladies of Zimbabwe in December 2006. In domestic cricket, she served as the team’s head coach for the Mountaineers women’s squad. Under Mpofu, the Mountaineers won Zimbabwe’s first-ever provincial women’s one-day championship, the Fifty50 Challenge, in the 2020–21 campaign. She guided them to another final the previous year, where they came in second place in the Women’s T20 Cup.
Sinikiwe was a member of the technical teams that helped Zimbabwe’s women rule Africa, gain ODI status, and most recently finished one victory short of making the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2023. In the 2020–21 season, Mountaineers Women, who she served as head coach, won Zimbabwe’s inaugural provincial women’s one-day tournament, the Fifty50 Challenge. She guided them to another final the previous year, where they came in second place in the Women’s T20 Cup.
